PCPS Announces Sunshine State Scholars for 2022

Polk County Public Schools is proud to announce our Sunshine State Scholars for 2022. Congratulations to James Barrios from Bartow IB, Tavian Douge from Lake Gibson High and Harry Milam from Bartow High! Every year, Florida’s school districts select their top high school juniors in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for the Sunshine State Scholars program. “To say it’s an honor is an understatement; there’s probably only one or two awards in the state that are a bigger deal,” said Jeff Hancock, PCPS’ senior director of K-12 science. Each student, along with their parents, will be invited to travel to Orlando (from March 31 to April 2) to meet with other Sunshine Scholars, connect with employers in STEM fields, and learn about their higher education options in Florida. “It’s quite a prestigious event they’ll be going to,” Hancock said. “(Barrios, Douge and Milam) are the best of our math and science students in the district this year, and we look forward to having them represent us.”
