The Florida Department of Education released 2022 standardized test scores this week, which show Polk County Public Schools maintained or improved in several academic areas. “Despite the many challenges over the past two years, our schools were able to achieve gains and maintain their progress in some subjects,” said Superintendent Frederick Heid. “There is still much work to do, but we are proud of our students, teachers and staff for overcoming so many obstacles and giving their full effort for these assessments.” “This year, Florida is transitioning to a progress monitoring system that will replace high-stakes testing. However, this final round of assessment data remains valuable. We will target areas that need improvement and provide all necessary support to help our students succeed.” NOTE: School grades are not yet available, but will likely be released by the state in the near future. Analysis of the FLDOE results shows: • 43% of Polk County Public Schools students in grades 3-10 scored a 3 or better on the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) English Language Arts exam, the same proportion that reached proficiency in 2021. • PCPS students in grades 3-8 improved overall on the FSA Math exam, with 42% scoring a 3 or higher. In 2021, 38% of students were proficient. • Students taking the FSA Algebra 1 end-of-course exam showed year-to-year improvement, with 41% scoring a 3 or better, up from 37% the prior year. • 37% of students earned a 3 or higher the FSA Geometry end-of-course exam, up from 33% the year prior. • 37% of fifth-grade students scored 3 or higher on the Science assessment, down from 39% in 2021. • 36% of eight-grade students scored 3 or higher on the Science assessment, down from 39% in 2021. • 52% of students taking the Biology end-of-course exam scored 3 or higher, same from prior year. • 54% of students taking the U.S. History end-of-course exam scored 3 or better, down from 55% in 2021. • 67% of students taking the FSA Civics end-of-course exam scored a 3 or better, up from 63% in 2021.
