PCPS Mourns the Loss of Former Polk and Florida Teacher of the Year

Polk County Public Schools is mourning the loss of Dr. Samuel Bennett, a celebrated educator in our community. Dr. Bennett was a former PCPS teacher at Garner Elementary. He was the 2005 Polk County Teacher of the Year and was named Florida’s 2006 Teacher of the Year, ultimately becoming one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year. He most recently served as a professor at Southeastern University’s College of Education. Dr. Bennett passed away on Sept. 7, 2022. He was 70. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Winter Haven Worship Center. Family and friends will be received beginning at 2 p.m., with the service following at 3 p.m.
