It’s time to celebrate, Lakelanders. Waterskiing may have been invented in Minnesota, but it’s right here in Central Florida’s Polk County where it transformed into a global sport + entertainment phenomenon.
Here’s three ways to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Water Ski.
Watch the Cypress Gardens Skiers
Winter Haven is home to the Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team, a show ski team that includes former professional skiers. The team hosts free shows on Lake Silver on the third Saturday of each month. The next one is Sat., Aug. 20 at 5 p.m.
Get on the water
Join in on the celebration by getting out on the water yourself. Learn to water ski at Elite Cable Park — they offer a package perfect for beginners that includes all the equipment needed, a one-on-one coaching session + cable pass. Bonus: Check out more ways to hit the water.
See the pros compete
The crowning event of the centennial celebration is the IWWF World Water Ski Tournament, happening Oct. 19-23 at Lake Silver. The event features teams and individuals from around the world performing one hour spectator-friendly shows that combine entertainment with world class athletics.*
